Empowering users to respond to misinformation about Covid-19

The misinformation around Covid-19 made it particularly difficult for the scientific community to mitigate the spread of the disease as they depended on public cooperation which was being shaped by an ‘infodemic’ out-pacing scientific response. However, this public appetite for news also provided a new context in which to consider how to respond to misinformation. Increasing science and news literacy should serve as a foundation by explaining the scientific process to them to facilitate acceptance of evolving recommendations. This also leads to user empowerment where they feel emboldened to improve the information environment for everyone. This can lead to highly reliable social media feeds that provide high-quality news content when the focus shifts from not just consuming correct information but also sharing accurate news. Lastly, we should ground these in a global context where cultural contexts determine which strategy would be effective. For instance, in many countries WhatsApp is a popular source of information and presents unique challenges and opportunities as both misinformation and correction are more effective when coming from a close tie.
